Jayasuriya’s equation in the middle order – where he has not batted regularly since the early 1990s – and his role with the ball as Sri Lanka nurse Muttiah Muralitharan back will be crucial if Sri Lanka are to compete with India. For Sri Lanka these five matches provide an opportunity to assess their one-day prospects and identify areas they need to work on.

Harbhajan was turning it and so was Ojha, the debutant. Herath previously had taken 5 to restrict, can’t just say restrict but still, India to less than 700. Now, it should really be interesting how SL batters will bat with all those deficient in their back and the spinners getting a bit of help. India can’t afford sloppiness in the field and have to take each chances that come their way.

It has been a terrific days play for Indians. They were at one stage trouble after losing 4 early wickets. All there frontline masters were gone to rookies of Srilankans. And then after that Dravid unfolded his magic. Boundaries after boundaries, and he even hit a six, can you believe that, Dravid hitting a six. Srilankans will be ruing the fact that they omitted Mendis from the playing 11. He might have been some damage maker. If only they could have got one more wicket, then it would have been Srilanka after close of day sitting and looking pretty.
